Here are some interesting things to think about.....
Comair doesn't have much time to get people in place to cover this flying, so as the email today stated for the next two months this flying will be covered by CVG crews deadheading to and from the north east. (yet again another pay cut. Build all the trips with DHs at 100% and pay 75%)
Now, it would make sense for the company to open a vacancy bid before holding a displacement bid for a couple of different reasons.
If pilots are displaced to a new domicile the company has to pay to assist that crew member with moving expenses. Whereas if a vacancy is opened first lots of senior CAs and FOs right now that are being forced into reserve in CVG would actually bid JFK or the new base to hold a line. The company would not only save money from not having to assist with moving expenses, but they wouldn't have to pay for retraining that pilot being displaced into a different category.
I've been thinking about the housing situation a little more as well. If they end up displacing tons of crew members they are going to be stuck with a ton of people commuting from CVG to the northeast, not just JFK. These folks will be forced to commute, because there is no way people will be able to sell their houses right now in KY, OH, or IN. The company will end up with over half of their crews commuting with a clause to protect their jobs and will not be able to efficiently operate. They think cancellations are bad now. We are going to have to run Crew Shuttles from CVG to JFK 5 times a day or something.
I think everyone looking for some information should call your FO or CA reps. I am not saying that they have the answers right now, because for the most part they don't. However, they will fill you in with regard to the hurdles that they are facing and their concerns with all of this.
