Commanding a modern jetliner has less to do with the physical aspect of flying and more to do with being an effective manager, both in terms of aircraft systems and people skills. Comparing an early-era jet to a modern aircraft is akin to comparing a horse carriage to an automobile; different things requiring different skills.
