Merge AA and AE? Not likely. Mainline employees aren't willing to work for what AE pays. AMR will just keep chipping away at mainline contracts and keep shifting flying to AE. I think they're 10 year plan is to have AE do domestic flying for commuter pay. The sad part is that a lot of pilots at AE would do it.
