I recently purchased a Canon XSi SLR camera body (12 mp for about $600) and the EF-S 55-250mm. I bought the camera body from newegg.com, best deal I could find, and the lens and a few extras (bag, lens hood, cleaning kit) from amazon.com for less than $300. I'm really pleased with the combo. Now that there's a new entry level Canon, can't remember what it's called but it does video too, the XSi might be cheaper now.
Here's a sample shot...
Haven't really had time or opportunity for scenic shots.

A decent wide angle lens from Canon can easily set you back $800, and telephoto lens, almost double. Your $1k bose headset will look like cheap toys from China. Is it worth it? absolutely. YOu just have to watch your expenditure.
