Default New Camera?

What do you guys all recommend as far as a new camera is concerned?

I was originally thinking just a decent point and shoot, because I like the convenience of being able to just stick it in my pocket and forget about it... but I'd also like the quality and functionality of an SLR.

What are all you guys using and how do you like em?

What would you suggest for the best bang for your buck camera/lens?.. as I don't know too much about photography, yet? Any good reads to go along?

I just picked this up a few weeks ago. I like it so far but still a lot to learn with the manual functions. It's in the $350 range.

A sample from my HKG shots...

That's exactly what I've been shooting with for a year. Spend another chunk and get the 55-200mm vr lense Nikon 55-200mm VR The D40 works great for me but at times I wish I could have afforded the D40x due to the crop factor. The D40 is the perfect size for my flight bag.

A Beaver and a Beaver. Taken with the 55-200 vr lense.

Your pics have always been gorgeous, so that relieves me that you use the D40... unfortunately, I am still such a camera newb, I don't know anything about lenses/settings/etc. I'm not even sure what the 55-200mm VR stuff means in a practical sense.

I'm flattered but I seriously sucked at using my camera when I first got it. If you're going to get a camera just take it out and try all sorts of stuff with it. That's the best way to learn it in my opinion.

The 55-200mm VR refers to a 55-200 millimeter lens with vibration reduction. The kit lens is the 18-55mm which functions nicely for up close shooting, the 55-200mm is what I generally use to take pictures of planes.

Word of caution. Once you're on the road to DSLR, you'll never go back. You'll find that the lenses are much more expensive than anything that you'll own. A decent wide angle lens from Canon can easily set you back $800, and telephoto lens, almost double. Your $1k bose headset will look like cheap toys from China. Is it worth it? absolutely. YOu just have to watch your expenditure.

I recently purchased a Canon XSi SLR camera body (12 mp for about $600) and the EF-S 55-250mm. I bought the camera body from newegg.com, best deal I could find, and the lens and a few extras (bag, lens hood, cleaning kit) from amazon.com for less than $300. I'm really pleased with the combo. Now that there's a new entry level Canon, can't remember what it's called but it does video too, the XSi might be cheaper now.

Here's a sample shot...

Haven't really had time or opportunity for scenic shots.

I have a Nikon D40, highly recommend it! I've used a couple DSLR's but this is the first I've owned. Its pretty cheap on the DSLR scale but still takes great quality pictures. I still have the basic lens that comes with it but I'm hopeing to add the 55-200mm soon!
