Default Solo time??

I have 65 hours, with 10 PIC XC. I am trying to build up some PIC XC time so that I can get an instrument and commercial. I decided I would take each of my good friends for a trip somewhere (That way a few of them would help split the cost).

But today, someone told me that airlines look for SOLO time. I thought they were full of it. So my question is does solo time matter (no one else in the airplane), or is it the PIC time that matters???

On a side note, if I am training for my commercial license, and my instructor is onboard, can be both log PIC time (since I am rated in the airplane). How about for BFR's, flying club checkouts, etc... If you are rated in that category/class, and you are paying for the airplane, can you, or your instructor, or both of you log PIC time.
Thanks.
