Yeah RVR, that is a sad end to a fine machine. It doesn't look from the pictures like they salvaged the engines or anything. Would the insurance company not let them do it?
From the looks of the pictures, to me, they got the core engine out and left the cowlings. Now, I'm not sure what is true or not, but I've been told that UPS salvaged whatever they could from that airplane, which was not too much. Much of the cockpit instrumentation, EFIS, radios, etc. were toast due to the heavy smoke and soot of the fire. I think one or two of the engines were toast as well. Again, this is all secondhand and thirdhand info.
The main thing is that 3 fine aviators brought that burning ship down to the ground in one piece, saved themselves, and that airplane held on as long as she could. May she R.I.P. - rest in pieces!
