I'd say you told him the right thing, should be something like "you need to know everything." Well prepared students come away from checkrides thinking that it was a non-event, weak students come away wondering what just happened, or, why is my new certificate printed on this pretty pink paper

A good examiner or APD will typically only ask a few knowledge questions, mainly because, normally the "testee" will promptly spout the textbook answer and give the appearance of having a good command of the subject matter. It's when there are those long pregnant pauses with a few ummms and wellllls that the APD usually thinks to himself/herself "this isn't going to end well."

If "your friend" has to ask the question that he did, then there is a good chance he is not ready for the examination, in more ways than one.

Tell him to study hard. We don't call it "JEOPARDY" for nothing.
