Default ATP check ride with type ride

Hi
i already told my friend what i think but he wants me to double check here:

H e s going to take a type ride and do his ATP at the same time. he is wondering if he could be asked questions out of the ATP oral exam guide or just his airplanes systems.

I basically told him anything is fair game.

I can just see it now, "Sir, no one on APC said I needed to study that"

I'm no expert, I've only taken 8 checkrides and signed up at least 20 different students, but if I were going to take a Practical Test...I may just start with a book called the Practical Test Standards. That's just me though. Other people like to guess what else may be asked.

I may even go over some FARs, a study guide or two, the POH, maybe a systems review, the AIM, Av WX services, and pretty much everything else I've ever learned as a pilot.

Tell your friend to download or buy a copy of the latest ATP PTS and start studying. Everything listed and referenced in the PTS is fair game. Good luck.

Is he doing it a regional? If so, chances are that there will be very little time left over after doing systems and ops specs for the APD to ask PTS questions. That said, anything is fair game. But typically, the ops specs, flight planning and systems questions on a typical type ride will more than suffice for the ATP portion of the oral. Areas that I would give special attention to are weather questions with regards to approaches and alternates and fuel planning questions using the flight release. Sounds simple, but you would be amazed how many guys trip over themselves in those areas.

Well, I got a little of all of this on my ATP. Again, anything listed in the PTS is fair game.

They generally ask a few questions out of the ATP PTS, but very little. Anything is fair game and if there is a FAA guy in the room, he will ask questions.

I'd say you told him the right thing, should be something like "you need to know everything." Well prepared students come away from checkrides thinking that it was a non-event, weak students come away wondering what just happened, or, why is my new certificate printed on this pretty pink paper

A good examiner or APD will typically only ask a few knowledge questions, mainly because, normally the "testee" will promptly spout the textbook answer and give the appearance of having a good command of the subject matter. It's when there are those long pregnant pauses with a few ummms and wellllls that the APD usually thinks to himself/herself "this isn't going to end well."

If "your friend" has to ask the question that he did, then there is a good chance he is not ready for the examination, in more ways than one.

Tell him to study hard. We don't call it "JEOPARDY" for nothing.

Your answer is dead on and technically correct. Practically speaking though, there is very little time for general ATP knowledge questions during a type ride.

I've taken 3 type rides, BE-300, B737, and G200. My ATP was done with my King Air 350 type, and it, along with my other type ratings, consisted entirely of systems based knowledge on the applicable airframe. This is just my own personal experience.

I got my ATP in a Beech 99 during a Captain upgrade years ago at a commuter. Nothing other than the normal checkride oral. My Dad had me beat, though. He got his ATP at United on the DC 8 when he upgraded to captain. He flew F/O (for the schedules) until he could upgrade on the -8. He didn't want to fly the light twin (737) and his pay as DC 10 F/o was just under 727 Capt pay back then (late 70s).

If you have a Fed doing the oral you could be looking at 3 to 4 hours for the sysytems oral alone. Chances are you won't have too many "what king of cloud is this?" questions with that type of timeframe. My 757 oral was 4 hours, covering every switch and power source on all the panels. My Airbus requal oral was 1 hour with a company check airman. Your milage may vary.
