I knew about the 135s before I started teaching and positioned myself as best I could. The nearest airport from me with a hard surface runway was a 15-20min flight depending on the plane. Not everyone has the ease to hop to another airport. I have about 300 point to point and 150 50nm XC...sorry. You can get the XC for the ATP after you have the 135 job hauling cargo or something similar. My students will help me out, but I won't try and take advantage of them. Sometimes scheduling or location doesn't allow for the time to get built up.
