Since you, "...spent the 10 years wasting away at ComAir before getting hired by DAL", you were here during the strike, and that advice would have been appropo then, but not in today's environment.
Here's a clue (since you are employed and have no idea what it's like right now); you spend most of your days checking Monster, HotJobs, Usajobs, Craigslist, etc. looking for something that isn't a "work-from-home" scam, and fill out applications/send resumes. Get dressed in a suit, go to the most promising ones in person, and even though you know they're hiring for a job you might be qualified for, one of two outcomes seems to be the trend; HR has 100 applicants for 1 job, or they act like your resume is loaded with Anthrax and won't touch it. Call some jobs listed as "General Labor", and find the position filled hours ago (even though it only paid around min. wage). Call freinds and acquaintances who've been avoiding you lately because they know you're "keeping in touch" because you want a job. Go home to family, try not to let it affect your attitude, and spend evenings on APC in the hopes ComAir might call you back to the crappy-paying job you just happened to love for some sick reason.
Sorry if this rant is offensive to you, but I love advice to "just get a job" when even WalMart greeters are getting laid-off.
Great post, I agree with you 100%.
