I can't speak for other services, but the Air Force has done it's best to eliminate any kind of comradere and morale. We wear reflective belts and PT gear to the chow hall. We aren't allowed to drink alcohol (same in all services). Many aren't at FOBs but, it is austere. This at a place where the vast majority of us could care less about. Being displaced at a year at a time, away from our families, and some clowns are worried about the festive atmosphere of a Burger King? Are you kidding me?

The guys coming back from the field might enjoy a burger when they get back. We can eat from our mess kits, sleep in personally made shelters, wipe with leaves or bare hands, and bathe in sewage pits. That might make it suck more, which seems to be the plan...

Yes, they might. The problem is deeper than that. I can't speak for Afghanistan except what you see on the news, but in Iraq, it's not the BK that's a mission distractor. Its the clandestine clubs, booze (like I said GO 1 is a joke), prostitutuion by soldiers, etc. It's all there, and we flew several drug overdoses to Baghdad. A dumb way to lose a soldier.
