Dustoff,
I can speak for Afghanistan. I am not saying that their isn't booze and prostitution in country, I am sure there probably is. I am disappointed that I have never been invited to the party though! But, getting rid of an ice cream shop and Burger King aren't going to stop this stuff. Alcohol isn't widespread, it's just too hard for most to get. If you snuck some in, it wouldn't last long.
As you know, it's a complete bummer going over there. Time away from your family, miserable conditions (yes even for those on the bigger bases, Kandahar and Bagram), and again, most people have no real idea why we are there. To me, it is a no win situation. These places will be corrupt and to a large degree lawless long after we leave. But, we're there now, and I believe it is hard to get out once your committed. I think the Afghan surge is a good idea, let's give it our all and see what happens.
I just don't see what a few reminders of home are such a bad idea. These places totally suck, and there is no reason to make them suck more. If a 19 year old wants a whopper and spend his own money, big deal. It just might be the last whopper he'll ever eat.
By the way, anyone bragging about getting combat zone exclusion/hostile fire pay on a quick trip or an overfly needs their tail kicked. I'll gladly help you...
