I think this is exactly what their doing. However can someone explain to me why a CAL/Alaska merger wouldn't work? Alaska has the west coast that CAL wants, All boeing fleets, just create the pacific flying from there.
CAL needs/wants widebody lift, AK doesnt give them that. It gives them access but still would leave them with a huge expense of adding lift to fit the access. UAL comes with access and lift.
