the area around DTW airport does not represent southeast michigan well at all. If you have some time, venture out and go to some of the metro parks. Go downtown to the casino's or to a summer afternoon tiger game (its safe) the redbull air race is on the riverfront i believe june 6th and 7th. Also, if you are a golfer, there are tons of courses around. Royal Oak, Ann Arbor, and Novi have pretty good nightlife as well.
No kidding, If all you see is Romulus (the city the airport is in, you are going to be depressed) I'm up in Farmington Hills (25 minutes to the employee lot), and it is really pretty nice. Livonia, Northville, Novi, Wixom, Walled Lake...just as nice as any place around Cincinnati. Plenty of parks, and Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, Novi, and the Casino's for night life. Also on days of sporting events all the bars around the stadiums.
I did stray into a not so great part of the city the other day, (McNichols and Lasher, I don't recommend going there) Went to a closed high school track to run...that was a bit of a mistake on my part.
Winters are not much different than CVG and JFK. Except the people here can actually drive in the snow and our chili doesn't suck.
