My father in law blew his GI bill on aviation and has always regretted it. Get a real profession and use the proceeds from it to fund your aviation training. At least that way you will have a solid back up plan.

I don't think anybody has offered up this idea yet, but if he gets his certs/ratings and an aviation degree for free, he could then go on to earn his masters in something else (MBA etc.) and that's all he will have paid for. He gets to take a shot at aviation for free and earns a masters degree for cheap as a backup plan. Not too bad of a deal IMHO.
