I agree. Im an ALPA member but as a first year pilot I am not fully represented by ALPA so I don't fully represent ALPA. Yes, I know I am not paying union dues yet so lets not go down that road. What exactly do you mean by looking out for first year pilots? If it's pay only, then I would agree. But, I have seen more than once where a probationary pilot got himself into trouble somehow and ALPA still represented him and kept him from getting fired.
