Delta Cargo offers employee discounts for shipping pets

Delta Cargo is offering employees a discount for their pets traveling as cargo within the U.S.
A 20% discount now applies for dogs or cats that are shipped as cargo within the US. The discount is for shipping an employee’s personal pets only. Employees are eligible for the discount if they have at least one year of service with Delta, Comair, Compass or Mesaba.
The discount applies to pets traveling as cargo without the employee accompanying the pet. Pets traveling as checked luggage with the nonrevenue traveler will continue to be charged the full pet fee.
Fees are waived for pets traveling as carry-on luggage.
Shipments of pets and other animals depend on weather conditions where temperatures are not too hot or too cold.
last time i traveled with a dog was in 2008 and i had to pay $150 ($75 each way) The dog was in a carry on tote, so i guess now it would have been free. Of course i than had the dog listed as a service animal and under the ADA act he travels free now anyway.

You do need to have an airline approved carrier either way you send the dog though. If the dog is small enough and your traveling with it i can recommend the one i bought. The article from DLNet that bob posted is good you should call DL reservation and ask what the pet charge is since it seems like your situation might be different than mine.
