The story I heard was that Fedex mandated Boeing develop a 777-200 P/F conversion plan if they were to purchase new 777 freighters. Unfortunately, they didn't put any limits on the price of the conversion. Rumor has it it that the 777-200 P/F conversion may cost $100 million per aircraft. There's something about a major renovation to the weight bearing capacity of the main cargo floor that requires an involved tear-down and rebuilding.
At an LCA meeting last February (old news... I know), O had said that part of the 777 contract was that Boeing have a P2F plan in place. He said that the overall thought was that when the 787 came online and the pax carriers ditched their 777-200s for the 787, we could snap up the 777s and convert them. He didn't say anything about the cost of conversion.
