I don't give a flying Flip what SWA makes or anybody else for that matter. I don't care what you made in 2000, 1993, or 1963 for that matter. It has absolutely no relevance to today. What I do care about is what I make for the next 15 years. 5 years of ZERO and 10 years of C2K rates does me no good.
I am beginning my peak earning years. I've got so many years to earn enough to live the rest of my life. 5 years of un or underemployment kills me and thousands of other junior Delta pilots. That's 5 years of lost compounding interest in a DC plan. You cannot recover from that.
Be a man, suck it up, take the furlough. Nice attitude for guys touting a new union that is supposed to represent Delta Pilots. Sounds like it's going to represent senior Delta pilots at the expense of everyone else. How would you react if I said (and had the power to affect it) "Suck it up, be a man, lower your standard of living and live within your means!"
As a free market conservative I don't believe in a finite pie theory in a macroeconomic system. However, in this microeconomic system that is Delta Air Lines, there is a finite amount of money that will be allocated to labor costs. Those of you who think that labor costs are insignificant are living in Candy Land. You raise the cost of labor by two billion and something is going to give. You senior guys who think you are immune to scope loss, beware. Every new member of Skyteam is a dagger pointed at your 777/747 seat. They don't even need to change the contract to do that. Look at JFK-CDG.
We don't live in a vacuum. Price yourselves out of the market and you will suffer. Swa is a small part of our market, BTW. The US legacies are a part and so is every other Skyteam member. You know how much I wan't? $1 less than KLM/Air France.
