Considering they told us to expect to hear in 5-7 days, when is it appropriate to follow up? Should it be done by phone or email?
Be patient...things happen. You never know what the hang up is. If you don't hear anything by the end of week three or even four, send an email to your point of contact asking VERY HUMBLY if they need any additional information from you. The "expectation" of hearing within 5-7 days is simply a guess on their part, something may have come up to delay any notifications. Perhaps even something completely unrelated to you or your interview group. Rick also made a very good point about the investigation not being final. That may be a sticking point for them.
As far as AE - the interviewers may very well have wanted to hire you but there might be a company policy in place that prevented an employment offer. You never know - company policies are created and abolished all the time.
