Typically, you find a guy that is weak and or not studying like he should and when it surfaces, they blame the training dept. Kalitta is pretty good and patient with guys in training. If you fail, it is usually you. The B747 is not an entry level airplane. They expect you to know how to fly when you get here. It is the "Fire Hose" method, like any other airline training program. If you cant get it, move over, there is someone waiting that can!
It's pretty rare for a new-hire to get axed. It does happen occasionally, but not before more re-training than would be afforded at most other airlines. They don't hire people with the intention of washing them out. There's a genuine need for crews and it serves no purpose to not give every opportunity for success. Make no mistake though, they will not just hand it to you.
Literally hundreds of people have been through the training with an extremely low wash-out rate. Sometimes it's simply a matter of being more than a person can handle, be it the lack of initiative, comprehension, and or flying skill.
