I guess that's partly due to pilots knowing what they do while at cruise and there not being a great desire to go into a deep explanation about it. While pay has been jacked with and thus gives cause for more emotional discussion.
Honestly, though, as a guy who only spends about 30 - 45 mins at cruise most of the time there's not a whole lot of free time for anything other than doing what needs to be done. As for what that is it's been answered on page 1. International guys have a lot more to do regarding more detailed fuel / wind planning, track coordination, etc.
