It cracks me up that there is a thread about what a pilot does in flight after the AP is on, that is one page long. However, the threads that talk about said pilot's need for a raise are longer than a college text book.

Not a flame just on observation

I guess that's partly due to pilots knowing what they do while at cruise and there not being a great desire to go into a deep explanation about it. While pay has been jacked with and thus gives cause for more emotional discussion.

Honestly, though, as a guy who only spends about 30 - 45 mins at cruise most of the time there's not a whole lot of free time for anything other than doing what needs to be done. As for what that is it's been answered on page 1. International guys have a lot more to do regarding more detailed fuel / wind planning, track coordination, etc.

Well said, I know the ongoing stigma of many uneducated people is that we, as pilots, do very little since the autopilot takes care of everything. These would be the same people who think passenger planes will eventually fly without pilots.

Point is, it's probably not worth getting into or explaining, we all know what our jobs consist of, as well as what our self worth should be.
