He has an additional characteristic in the fact that he already lives a poor and disconnected lifestyle anyway. He might as well be an airline pilot since he rejects conventional lifestyle choices, lives like a minimalist and does not hold any real love for the job either.
It seems to me that anyone who has held positions where they really flew airplanes like bush pilots, crop dusters and fighter pilots are very disappointed with the hands in the lap proceduralised automaton style of the airlines.
After being the master of all they once surveyed It is no fun at all to be a procedure and manual driven FO.
