My friends goal is to get out of aviation entirely. He as worked several part 135 jobs in Alaska but knows how empty your life becomes while living in a shack in St. Marys Alaska.

His options are to work at Safeway as a bag boy or make a sacricife and attempt a regional airlines job. My point to him is that at least the airline job will offer good medical and travel benefits.

Sadly I think he will choose the Safeway option.

You have got it! He has an additional characteristic in the fact that he already lives a poor and disconnected lifestyle anyway. He might as well be an airline pilot since he rejects conventional lifestyle choices, lives like a minimalist and does not hold any real love for the job either.

It seems to me that anyone who has held positions where they really flew airplanes like bush pilots, crop dusters and fighter pilots are very disappointed with the hands in the lap proceduralised automaton style of the airlines.

After being the master of all they once surveyed It is no fun at all to be a procedure and manual driven FO.

Umm, seems too obvious, but maybe he needs to get out of Alaska.
