How often do airbus drivers here rely on normal law protections? On retrospection even "Sully" triggered alpha prot on his way down and was significantly slower than VBG as they went through the checklists, ultimately hitting the stall speed several hundred feet up.
Indeed, this may have been intentional and he figured that approximating the minimum sink speed would be best once decided not going to try for Teterboro and he could just ride the floor... but it is nice to have the protection rather than worry about the stall, when protection lost monitoring this would be significantly more taxing and he would have had to maintain more speed. Obviously outstanding pilot and amazing outcome in that particular case.
