Bayview, Whitefish Bay, Shorewood are all good areas. I personally like Wauwatosa. You're a bit off the beaten path there but it's a fantastic area and not too bad of a commute still.
Property taxes are considerably higher in Milwaukee County.

I lived in the MKE area my first 25 years and will be going back shortly, advice above is spot on mostly. The real estate market there in general has become a popular spot of outside investor money, so you won't be finding a lot of diamonds in the rough. Milwaukee was an immigrant town from its inception till now, with lots of little neighborhoods, but I'd definitely get a feel for the area before buying. It can go from fine to not fine in a few blocks.
Where you go will also depend on priorities, and people have differing opinions. Of note, Milwaukee County proper has noticeably higher property taxes than the surrounding ones, but there also aren't a ton of 2/3/4 family houses outside of Milwaukee County.
Neighborhoods I'd recommend:
City of Milwaukee proper: Bay View, East Side, Story Hill, Enderis Park, maybe Washington Heights
Milwaukee County: Wauwatosa (personal favorite), Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Cudahy, Oak Creek. Honestly none are bad, some just have more stuff than others.
Surrounding Counties: Everything else, nothing really bad, just perpetually farther from stuff, but obviously more space.
