Default MKE housing

Hello all.

My question for all you Air Wis pilots and staff based in MKE- I am looking at purchasing property and investing in Milwaukee. Most likely a few miles north and west of the actual city and maybe about 15 minutes away from General Mitchell. What is the housing situation like for all of you? To get more to the point.... Would it be pretty easy to rent out a duplex (2-3 bedrooms, 1000-1200 square feet in each unit) to a couple of pilots and/ or flight attendants at a price point of $850-1100 per month?

Quick introduction about me: 33 year old full time police officer, part time commercial pilot/cfi, new real estate investor. I live in Chicago. I will be transitioning to full time aviation (probably airlines) in 8 years when I retire from law enforcement

Like I said, I’m a new real estate investor and am looking to buy a turn key property ASAP and get some tenants in there. Since I am also in the aviation field and know how mature and responsible (ha) we all are in this industry, I figured I’d open the opportunity to pilots or flight attendants to be my tenants before advertising to the general public.

Just looking for some honest input about what the MKE housing situation is like and if this could interest a decent amount of people.

Thanks in advance!

Very bad area. If flight attendants/pilots are going to live there I hope they are packing heat! Stay South of I-94 and west of I-41. Amazon is building in Oak Creek and Foxconn is building south of Oak Creek.

That is excellent information and a start to exactly some answers I’m looking for. Thank you very much!

I'll respectfully disagree with Melit. There is a lot of good investment potential in the area just north of KMKE (the Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee.) 5-10 minutes from the airport, lots of trendy bars/ restaurants/ coffee shops. It's an older part of the city so much of the housing units are duplex/ Polish Flat types which would lend themselves to rentals/ crash pads.

The area you describe north and west of the city is more suburban, higher cost and mostly single family. Plus it is 30-45 minutes from the airport in any kind of traffic, depending how far out you go.

The north and west sides of the city are more urban with higher crime rates, although some areas are pretty decent and might fit your needs.

The areas east and south of the airport might also fit your requirements- less hip than Bay View but still a solid, lower-middle class area with low crime, and close to the airport.

Thanks a lot. That’s very helpful. Just as an example, two properties that I saw were in the 2400 block of N 22nd St and the 3700 block of N 10th St. That area seems to pop up a lot with decent deals and each ad I see say it is either close to of part of a revitalizing neighborhood or something to that effect. I just have no idea if that’s actually true or not. I haven’t had the chance to come tour around the city just yet and this whole idea of renting to airline employees just popped into my head recently so every little bit of input helps! I knew that there were some big business planned to move in close to Milwaukee so that’s always a good sign too.

I’ve found posters like melit, especially that use the phrase “they better be packing heat”, tend to vastly exaggerate how bad a neighborhood actually is.

Thats what I said. Stay south of I-94 and that is where Bay View is.

"The areas east and south of the airport might also fit your requirements" Thats what I said. Thats where Oak Creek is.

"The north and west sides of the city are more urban with higher crime rates" Thats what I said and the area the OP was interested in. Isnt that the Sherman Park "area"? Yeah packin heat is a good idea because everyone else is. I wouldn't buy/live east of Wauwatosa.
My source is me looking out my car window and thinking F that..So we do agree after all.

If that's the area I'm thinking about ( Fond Du Lac Ave and North Ave area) I'm sure 187Breezy will agree with me that that is not a good idea. This is the area.

I don't want to get into an argument over this, but you specifically excluded most of Milwaukee with this statement:

There are a lot of decent areas both north of 94 and/ or east of 41 (including my house!) and you painted over them with a pretty broad brush.

To the OP- the 2 addresses you mentioned are right in the area that Melit and I can both agree are bad. They might make good real estate investments, but not to rent out to pilots.

I agree it was a generalization but to someone that is from out of town they can look at a map and get an idea of the area.
