It basically means that any days off other than your assigned are extremely difficult to get. Unless you can trade pilot to pilot it’s impossible. People have been good about trading to help each other out for the odd summer weekend. There is a Facebook page to trade but it’s really hit and miss.
Years prior trading wasn’t automatic but I was able to plan ahead for specific weekends during the year. The last year it was all but impossible the year it’s shaping up to be the same. It’s kind of important for people to know.

One of the most egregious oversights in our vacation system is how it works on reserve.
If a day off falls on a vacation day, then you get ZERO.
No comp day, no extra money. You lose your vacation day, like it never even happened.

Come on now! It’s 3.5 credit toward you making the monthly minimum!

you'll have to forgive newguy, he's curently trying to remove his foot from his mouth on our Alyeska forum.
Without getting into the weeds of our vacation process, here are the basics:
value = 3.5 hr per day
1-4 yos = 15 days, 5-8 = 21, 9-12 = 24, 13-19 = 30, 20-24 = 35, 25-30 = 40 and > 31= 41.
we bid for vacay days in four, 2 week blocks starting in Sept. All seniority order. We can trade day for day with either open time or pilot to pilot. A vacation day will drop a trip but the company requires you to have the monthly min credit of 75, or higher on flex up months (76-78). So if you don't have enough credit from you vacay days after the drop, you end up having to pick up flying to meet the monthly min. There's more to it but those are the basics.

What he meant to say is it has the most senior and the least senior and a straight line graph between the two. In either seat if you are not in the top 10% then you are not in control of your schedule. Here is the “Seattle System”….figure out what your seniority holds, convince yourself(by whatever means necessary) that that is pretty much what you want, then mostly bid that, then tell your buds that you “typically” get somewhere in your top ten choices, then remind yourself that you are smart and life is great….Repeat that 12 times per year
