The weather north of the Columbia actually is not much different than that just south of it. Vancouver and its surroundings have some nice areas, generally less expensive than those on the Oregon side. The City of Roses (Portland) used to be a very beautiful city and nice place to visit and live but it’s lost a lot of its luster lately. Between homeless and drug sales, it’s probably better to live on the Wa side and avoid the state income tax.

Vancouver is pretty nice especially with the new renovations downtown. You can also try places further north such as Battle Ground or Woodburn, WA if you’re into more rural living.
On the Oregon side Hillsboro is in the West and also a nicer area. Many of the people that live there are working in the tech field at companies like Intel. There are many parks that are nice and public amenities. It’s also close to downtown. Only about a 20 to 30 minute drive depending on traffic. Further west from Hillsboro there are two other towns called Forest Grove and Cornelius. These are also fairly nice areas.
I spent time living in the east near Gresham and Troutdale,Vancouver, and Hillsboro. I would say Vancouver and Hillsboro were nicer overall.

Washington side is great. Even if eventually there is a toll across the river. As a previous poster indicated, some very nice areas outside of the city proper. Years ago I used to love my PDX downtown layovers, but now that I have been in the area for several years I would never recommend living in the city, its dirty, dangerous and broken.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — 11 Jan 2023.
A family victimized by gun violence is now in hiding and searching for a safe place to stay after police say they were shot at an east Portland apartment complex Tuesday night.
Still shaken and freshly bandaged, the adult victim, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons, says he was babysitting his 11-year-old niece at the Morgan Place Apartments when 36-year-old Rashad Calbert came to the door.
Rashad Calbert is suspected of shooting two people, including an 11-year-old girl, on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023 (Courtesy: PPB).“I heard this pop pop pop pop. I felt my hand and took off running to the living room because my niece was sitting on the bed. And I grabbed her up and went to the kitchen and hid behind the wall where my dad’s toolbox was, because it was all metal, so we wouldn’t get shot. And my niece was crying because she got shot in the belly, in the arm and chest,” the victim said

Parts of Portland are sketch, parts of Vancouver are sketch.

All true, but the trend is definitely not your friend:
