American Airlines Pilot Has Pay Docked For Insisting On Masks In The Cockpit

October 7, 2020
American Airlines passengers have to wear masks throughout their journey – in all areas of the terminal controlled by the airline as well as on board (many airports require masks, too). Cabin crew have to wear masks as well throughout the flight. However pilots are allowed to take off their masks inside the cockpit.

Multiple pilots have reported being taken off of trips, forfeiting pay, because they refuse to fly with another crewmember up front who won’t wear a mask.

I refuse to wear a device which can cause communication problems while flying. Other crew members are free to take a pass on the flight and let a reserve pilot take over.

Okay a single pilot aircraft where communication with another pilot is not necessary and the mic is built into the mask. I hear just fine but I cannot understand half of what people are saying when they are wearing a mask. Fine in normal situations, I can just ask you to repeat it, not fine in a time critical emergency or in a critical phase of flight.

let me guess....you’re also against mask mandates because they infringe on your freedom and this is America! Be part of the solution, not the problem...it’s not that difficult.

...and I’ve flown both mask on and mask off. I prefer mask off, but if the other pilot feels more comfortable with mask on, no big deal. We can hear just other fine so don’t be dramatic.

I won't wear a mask in the cockpit. Your choice if you want to wear one or not. Just expect a lot of "Whats?" and "Huhs" and "Say Agains" if you are wearing one.

Safety stats are abysmal by 121 standards. We don't fly inverted or in form either.

And do you really wear it all the time?

THIS!!

And no, I am not against mask mandates for public places indoors where social distancing is difficult. In a airliner cockpit where communication is critical and your odds of contracting the virus are lower than the odds of being struck by lightening, I will be going without and enhancing safety. Being part of the solution by avoiding crashes.

Well I guess thanks for reaffirming my opinion that you’re being dramatic. Those aren’t the odds (tell that to the 777 crew who contracted Covid in the spring) and you can hear just fine. Maybe spring for something a little better then a Telex 750? And so if someone has a sick/at risk spouse at home and for their own peace of mind they request you wear a mask, you’re going to say no? Cool man...

People like you need to stop making this job harder then it has to be.

Who cares about the mask... Real men (and pilots) fly with their hat on (even on transcons) and maybe with their leather jacket.
