Default Training position AA vs UAL

Hi.

I am in a position where I have received a start date with AA on May 17th, and an interview with UAL on June 12th. It will be at least 4 months from start date AA until I can join UA. I am not interested in Long Haul, did it for 8 years as a captain with Emirates. I am 49 so only 16 years left.

I would like your 2 cents. I am picturing myself in Dallas or Denver as I like to join training department in either job, sick of flying and dream is do to most of my time in Sim as instructor. How are the chances in AA for this? Commuting not an option.

Any advice highly appreciated.

Sent you a PM. Bottom line - UAL uses only line pilots for sim instructor jobs, you can do it as early as 12 months after being hired and you will be paid WB rate to instruct a 737 sim. If you live in Colorado - UAL is the only answer.

AA does not use line pilots as sim instructors.

It probably will be using line pilots as Instructor Pilots with the new contract. Mostly F/Os, but I don't think it is planned to be exclusively F/Os. Pay capped at 12 year F/O widebody rate. That's per the latest update, all subject to change of course, until the ink is dry and the vote is in.

1) take the AA class
2) if you can move the interview/class so that they don’t conflict, that is better
3) you can absolutely leave AA after 3 months
4) if your goal is to be an instructor, UAL as noted above is the superior choice because of the contractual structure of the sim instructors

It sounds like seniority list instructors are coming to AA with the next contract. How that compares to UAL, I dunno. I have a few UAL friends doing that at “TK” in Denver and they seem to think it’s a good deal.

Would that put upward pressure on pilot hiring at AA? Or would instructors just also do some line flying and they'd open some additional instructor slots to account for that?

I didn't know this about AA. Is everybody at the training center non-seniority list currently, or are there non-sim instructor slots for pilots? If I got hired, I would want to live in DFW, and am very interesting in getting involved in training/safety (or ops in general) at some point because I am passionate about both of those things, and being able to be home every night at points would be nice.

You have people who do the procedures trainers and simulator instructors, both of which are not line pilots. Then, you have check airman who do the MV, Loft, and LOE. With the new contract, there is talk that they will start using some line pilots as instructors, from what I understand.
