Default LAX

Hi,

I am just wondering how the LAX 737 base works with regards to multiple airports, especially SAN.

I live about 45 minutes to an hour east of LAX and about 20 minutes from ONT. But I’m about 2 hours or more from SAN.

Do I need to cover SAN while on reserve? How long do I have before I would need to report? What about parking, is it covered?

Thanks, excited to join the fAAmily next week!

we have no defined callout time. The rule of thumb that scheduling uses in LAX is something like 4-5 hours. Inside that I think they try and reassign someone vs hoping a reserve hustles to the airport. Parking is covered at all airports. I think SAN guys proffer for the SAN trips so you won’t have to go there that much

While on reserve you could be sent to cover a SAN trip, but as the previous poster said people who prefer SAN can proffer for SAN trips. Not saying you’ll never get called for a SAN trip but my guess is that it would be rare. Only a small percentage of 73 trips are SAN based. Way more SNA and LAX trips.

Once you’re a lineholder you could avoid SAN trips because there are plenty of pilots that want them. You probably couldn’t bid for a SAN trip for your first year even if you wanted to.

It sounds like ONT would be good for you but there never seem to be ONT 73 trips in the bid packages each month. But there are some ONT 320 trips every month. If you prefer LAX and ONT I’d recommend the 320.

Good luck!

Welcome to AA! Not sure where you live exactly (sounds close to where I was) but I was living just North of ONT in Upland / Alta Loma area and we have a ton of trips that go out of ONT on the 320. They used to be primarily 737 trips but then it all changed. Those trips went very junior at the time as a line holder and for a minute all I did was nothing but ONT. If I were you, I'd bid the 320 assuming they still have the majority of ONT trips and go from there. Good luck!

I see LAX 320 CA is now more senior than DFW 320 CA. Why is LAX so senior? Is this related to the terminal construction or just that it is one of only two west options?

LAX has been shrinking so much. People leave the base or retire and they don't backfill, plus barely any new hires the last year. Supposedly it's all due to the construction going on. That and AA's focus on places not named Asia at the moment. Feed into LAX is supposed to support those Asia/Pacific routes and it's a skeleton compared to pre Covid. Only time will tell.

I just received a CJO. I live in Seattle and a bus driver. I was looking at the class drops during May and everything seems to be MIA or LGA. No LAX or PHX??
Why is that? Does this mean these bases just aren’t available to new hires and this won’t be an option for me?
Thanks

More than likely not. LAX pops up every now and then in the class drops with 1 or 2 spots. PHX never does.

But from what it looks like you can usually get the base you want within 6 months to a year. Prepare for an east coast commute for at least a little while if you come here.
