LAX base

A couple of questions from a dreamer hoping to get on with AA eventually. How are the trips out of LAX ? Is the 321 the only narrow body flying to Hawaii? Or Does the 320 & 737 fly there as well? Also, my follow up question is how long would it take to hold a schedule of half your trips departing out of San Diego on narrow body. I hear it’s a shared base similar to the NY and SouthFL area. Does 737 or Airbus go more senior out of these two airports? Thanks!

Hawaii is only on the 320. The 737s are not ETOPS certified at AA.

SAN is a supplemental base to LAX, currently, the 737 is the only fleet that can have SAN trips (that would change with TA 2.0 approval). Flying tends to shift around, and I didn’t see any SAN trips for August 2023 on the 737 because the 737 flying in SAN was curtailed this month.

The Airbus is generally more senior in LAX, it’s regarded as a nicer airplane with more transcons and Hawaii flying- but there are a ton of redeyes out of LAX.

If I may piggyback on this thread, how hard is it to be based in LAX if I live in San Francisco.

Thanks in the advance.

Did SAN have any reserve lines?

If you want LAX right away you better like Redeyes. There are also trips that start in ONT and SNA. In a couple years a lot might change once LAX construction is finished

How junior is LAX and what's the most junior type on base?

I was able to hold it as a 737 FO on the last vacancy. May 2023 hire. There’s two people junior to me that got it as well.

I would say you can probably hold it within 6 months of hire.

No, there’s no such thing as reserve lines for satellite bases. And SAN is technically not a satellite base. If you’re LAX based and on reserve the only way you could get a SAN trip is if one is in open time and you proffer for it. Reserves cannot be assigned SAN trips unless they volunteer to do them, and there’s still no guarantee you may get it. It depends on your bucket, seniority, etc. However, LAX reserves can be assigned trips originating out of LAX, SNA, or ONT whether they proffer for them or not.
