I have not had internet work on any AA flights over water. It may be possible the aircraft used to Hawaii have a satellite based system but it has not functioned on any Caribbean flights I have flown. Drops off leaving Florida.

Not sure what you're talking about. Clearly you're not an AA pilot. Narrowbody internet works really well even overwater. OP's friend will have no issues streaming Live TV.

He's thinking of the days of GoGo internet. I believe all of the fleet has since been updated to satellite. Or are there still a few stragglers?

100% of American's narrowbody fleet will be Viasat within the next month or two. Currently it stands at something like 98%.
