Atlas Air CBA Showdown: 2021 Edition
#121
Does Atlas actually have a reason to work with IBT after the decision comes out and the new contract is put together? It seems like they are filling classes and have no shortage of candidates, so why should they care about retention? I have an upcoming class date and also have an interview from a LCC. What is my motivation to go to 5Y other than heavy time? More so what is my motivation to stay when hiring is picking up across the industry?
The big question is, what does Amazon want? Will Amazon, or possibly a hedge fund, buy Atlas? If so, will it be better, or worse???

The arbitrated contract will probably be a very modest improvement. IF that is the case, then a LOT of pilots will leave. We have hired a LOT of regional pilots that came here because they had to. If the contract is not great, almost all of them will leave. UAL is hiring this month, and the whole industry is in an upswing, with hiring everywhere. If the contract causes a lot of pilots to walk, then mgmt will have to come to the union for a better contract, just to maintain staffing levels.

The current contract was so bad that it was used as leverage to prevent a merged contract with Southern. Just prior to Covid the company had a hard time finding anyone to work there and they were hemorrhaging pilots. IF the company wins then there's no way this contract will be viable 5 years from now. It just won't.
Upgrade times will go back to a year or two at Delta. They're 2-3 years at FedEx. American is probably gonna lose half their list over the next 5-10 years.... Congrats Purchase! You won! Now nobody will want to work there for the next 5 years AND then when you start negotiations in 5.5 years you'll be where you were on March 1st 2020.... And you'll have a ****ed off pilot group the entire time.

Atlas doesn’t care about attrition and managements actions before COVID prove that. In arbitration they stated they want to attract and retain pilots that aren’t hireable by major airlines. They view their crews as widebody regional or part 135 pilots, and to be compensated as such. Their banner ads plastered all over APC say “Be a part of something bigger”. The only thing that’s bigger are the executive bonuses. How about LTD, 15% retirement, or industry standard rigs and guarantee? Sorry we can’t “be competitive” paying that. Here’s your 62 hours pay for 17 to 19 days circling the planet and thanks for all you do. In the meantime we’ll buy 4 more -8’s for over a billion dollars with our record profits and pay your payroll with the 400 mil in Cares Act money we got last year.
On the other hand, Atlas wont hesitate send any pilot here to some airport in the middle of China or Africa the whole crew has never seen before on some one off charter. Ask a UPS or Delta pilot to do that. At Atlas it’s routine….here’s your flight plan and you better not F up taking our 747 into that GA airport in the middle of Chad.
The company logic to the arbitrator re our next CBA was absurd on its face. We’re poor. Our pilots are third tier pilots. We’re losing airplanes and business because we pay so much. We should be compared to Air 21 and their 30 pilots and every bottom feeder 36th street operation there is. Hopefully the arbitrator will see through their smokescreen of lies and award a fair CBA.

The only way to win, is not to play the game...
Think about the fact that they are delaying inside of arbitration. They have no shame.
This place will be an even bigger train wreck if the contract does not come soon and meet industry standard.
We can't staff our flying now. Captains are being beaten up like a rented mule right now.

Sub-par on everything else.
If you're on the fence, you're a fool to stick around and wait.
Most pilots on the line are getting the message and are leaving or just waiting on class dates at real destination airlines.
Retention will be a blood bath come 3rd quarter and the 4th quarter will be even worse when airplanes have to get parked due to insufficient staffing.

The amalgamated CBA (Whenever the hell that comes out) at best will be Kalitta -10%....That's what the company wants, and has made every effort to show thats all they are "willing" to afford.
Sub-par on everything else.

I hear you!
The crazy thing is the that Kalitta plus 10% is $300 an hour. That is how far off we are. Of course, it would be foolish to only look at the rate without considering work rules and soft money, of which, we currently have NONE!!!!
I am stuck in the trap that many of us are, getting older, actually like the job itself, don't want to fly pax, and don't want to start over.
If this contract blows, I might look to get out of 121 flying and try some local stuff...

Don't forget about the harm you put your body through during your time on the road. Sub standard catering and lack of sleep for half the month wrecks your body. I've seen plenty of walking zombies in Narita, ICN, etc. I've also had two Captains just quit and walk off the airplane because of the schedule changes.. I don't know how line guys even make it to 65. Someone should study them.
