"Atlas / Polar" Pilots - Advice Requested
#41
At last check -- about a month ago -- all hiring is complete. They (management) said they anticipate hiring the first half of next year but personally, I don't see why.
And here's why Hyuck hyuck: DHL BSA (block space agreement) is only set at the six aircraft at Polar. Well, we are fully staffed. The two airplanes on the Atlas side have recently been reallocated to another customer. As far as effective date, I don't know.
Here's the kicker. Careful what you wish for. Go to www.atlasair.com and listen to the earnigs report. There's a VERY scary message hidden within. In fact, it has me dusting off my resume. The twenty year DHL deal is ammendable every five years. Having said that, if they decide to terminate the aggreement, (not sure on the particulars) they have to take the airplanes with them. Not sure of the timeline as I haven't looked into specifics. So here's the scenario: Anyone remember the DHL/UPS deal in the works? Yep. That's my theory. They take the airplanes -- NO CREWS -- because of the F'd up scope clause that no one seems to monitor and we're gone. TAAA DAAAA!!!! BAM! All of sudden DHL has six 400's to lease to whomever (UPS) and furloughs run amuck. Yeah, this is all theory but I don't trust anyone after all the B.S. I've been through with other airlines.
This is what some on the Atlas side don't understand about our union holding their ground with the negotiations. If we are removed from a certificate, well, that's that. End of story. Oh yeah, last I checked, UPS is buying show room 400's. And when is the date that they can supply the additional lift for DHL? Think about it: It won't be too long and six -400's of Polar can/will/maybe be replaced by the UPS deal. After all, why would DHL use us when they are going to use UPS for domestic lift and UPS is in ANC for a sort as well.
So . . . if you want to step in get a type in the -400 come on in. Career choice: Hmmm . . . I'm a skeptic, albeit Obama is pro labor.

polarfr8dog, let me make sure I understand what you are saying:
1 - because of a contract atlas/polar has with DHL, they have to take the 4 B747's if/when they decide to cancel the contract.
2 - UPS is buying brand new 747s and DHL might use them instead of going with polar....
that doesn't sound very encouraging, what with Atlas' work rules seeming to suck almost as bad as my company's , maybe Southern Air or Kalitta is a better bet...

I wouldnt suggest that. I went from Southern to Atlas and found that the quality of life at Atlas was much better since Atlas has work rules and a contract that management seems to follow. I am not Southern bashing, I am just stating my opinion, there are some of the finest pilots there how are working very hard to improve things.

So youre saying that Southern Air workrules are worse than Atlas?
what deters me from Atlas is the 20 days (plus) blocks on duty, while SA's home basing is an attractive incentive. Polar pays more than either, and you can bid lines, with positioning to the aircraft...but uncertainty with the UPS deal puts me off...
that leaves Kalitta...who at least responds to applications

First, let me say all that I've written is speculation. I just don't see why DHL would use us when UPS gets the -400's up and running. The only thing we have to offer are the PVG (Shanghai) slots. Other than that why use us for a sort when UPS is probably going to be used for the domestic? Supposedly there's a big announcement on Monday from DHL. So we'll see.
As far as DHL taking the airplanes with them if they cancel . . . yes, that's what the earnings conference call has stated. The only part I'm not clear on is WHEN they would have to lease them out.

2. If uncertainty bothers you dont go into aviation.
3. Responding to applications is good. I assume that you dont have any job offers so your debate is purely academic and there for I wouldnt worry about it. I would go to who ever interviews and hires you.
