ACMI contracts come, ACMI contracts go...
Most of the planes DHL are dropping are being scooped up by Atlas' other customers. Its only a net loss of like 2 jets so, big whoop. Chances are DHL will be back the next time a flying contract with them comes up for bid.
Atlas does well during recessions. I wouldn't be surprised if the customers that they placed the surplus airplanes with aren't paying better anyway.

If they told the entire company it was probably a strategic move. They more than likely are counting on the information being leaked. If they didn’t want the public to know they would not tell the rank and file.
