Thanks for clearing that up, apparently a government contracting gig (which is what I'm considering doing) also won't preclude me from getting hired according to what has been posted above.

Good to know!

Also, FYI everyone I'm a newhire and I did IOE starting in Incheon with alternate travel from Guam. Finished IOE in Anchorage and used alternate travel for a hotel in Anchorage and a flight from Hong Kong to Ho Chi Minh. I Atlas jumpseated the Anchorage to Hong Kong leg. Next up my awarded line started on the 2nd with R2 in Anchorage but I VX'd the start of the trip to operate Shanghai to Anchorage on the 1st. Alternate travel netted Ho Chi Minh to Shanghai on the 31st and a hotel.

My conclusion is that it's totally possible to commute from Asia as a junior guy. There are some tricks to learn and you may not know whether you're leaving on Monday or Wednesday until Sunday night, but for me that's a feature not a bug.

What do you mean by alternate travel? Jumpseat? And what does VX mean?

Atlas normally buys you a ticket from your Gateway airport in the domestic U.S. to your crew base (Gateway travel). Alternate travel means you called Travel and asked them to send you somewhere else - if it costs less or the same, they're typically fine with it. There are games you can play, but I wouldn't recommend it for a new hire.

VX = wiling to fly on a day off.

Thanks for reply, captainv. Just trying to understand the alternate travel better here. Im in the pool right now and I live close to JFK. Lets say I get the 74 ANC base, would it be better for company to send me to Europe since it is potentially cheaper then being sent to ANC? Will this be considered playing games?

There are VERY few things at Atlas that are set in stone, other than "Everyday is like the first day".

The phrase "Better for the company" never comes into play.

To understand and use that philosophy would require a level of situational awareness and proactive thinking that simply does not exist at Atlas.

Does it exist at any ACMI carrier though? I would have thought it existed at Atlas of all places though...
