Just to give you an indication of how bad things are here, an 18 year 747 Captain just got notified of joining the pool at UPS!

I was already typed and had flown the -400 when I went thru that training. My wind shear training was five unrecoverable events (the "instructor" mentioned after the first that he would only give me those). My sim partner, a great guy former E4, got one recoverable event. I guess the "instructor," a little guy with glasses who flew a C17, was true to his word. He really disliked taxpayers. I got thru fine. Both my partner and I couldn't believe the poor quality of the training.
So you really are on your own to pass. Study in groups, that is what got most of my class thru.

But that was five years ago.

I really liked the idea of flying for Atlas, but after reading the last couple of pages, I am doubtful. I already have a CJO.

So all in all, coming to Atlas for many is to get to fly the 747? Or the lifestyle? Regional Captain make similar pay as 747 FO it seems!

I fly 747 now and get 10 days off in a row in a month and make 100K net a year (after taxes), will make 112K after a year. Schedule isn't too bad and get free first class commute anywhere on the airline. Maybe will get to fly the 787 or 777 or ATR captain with same pay in two years time. But the airline(line pilots) is so picky, that it sucks the fun out of flying. The only reason I am thinking of a change.

Should I stay away from Atlas? And look elsewhere? Any suggestions. I am thinking of moving back and live in Tampa and maybe get MIA later down the road. Chances of upgrade within 2-3 years (hypothetically)??

There a lot of airlines that are much better than Atlas where you could apply. Kalitta, Allegiant, any of the "Big 5" ...

It makes no sense to come here. Atlas will not be a worthy destination until there is a decent contract and the soonest that will happen is still years away... if ever.

Okay, I’ll help you out since most people are pretty high on the rhetoric.

You will get more than 10 days off, yes, and Tampa is very doable. You may not get 747, even though you’re typed (lots of TPA on the 767 so it isn’t all bad).

There is something to be said for what the past few posters have wrote about the laughable conditions here. Will it stay this way? Personally I’m 50/50. I don’t know. Upgrade in 3 years? Probably, but never guaranteed. You could just as easily be on the street if they decide to downsize for any reason (though I don’t find this likely, personally). Pay is gonna be worse than you make now and you will have 0 control Over what you make beyond guarantee. The flight ops here is in disarray-they are even lying to pilots to coerce them to fly into hostile areas such as Afghanistan with no support. Our customers despise our operation and would be happy to **** can us ASAP.

That said, it is a genuinely good group of people and some fun flying. And maybe one day we will have a real good contract. Can’t promise you that though. I think you need to make your own decision!

If i could go back and leave my regional FO job for this all over again, knowing what I know now, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Atlas is the worst job in the history of jobs. It will be 25-30 years before we see a contract. I’d rather flip burgers than work here! and I sure as heck would if I didn’t have two boats, an airplane, three houses, and a third world village depending on my paltry sub-standard income!
