Atlas Air Schedule

I know that every month is different at Atlas Air, and I've read through the threads about them, but... just curious if someone can post some current examples of monthly schedules, as actually flown, at Atlas Air for the different fleet types.

Mostly interested in the routing, length of layovers, and how many days actually away from home.

Thanks guys!

The schedule does not change monthly, it changes hourly. We are issued 8.9" Tabs with a scheduling app and an international data plan to keep track of it.

The only thing that can be said is that the company owns you for 17 days, extendable by 3 days in some situations (which pays well). Many trips are long, some are not. The general structure of schedules in a base can change from month to month, so what a given schedule looked like in December is not in any way a prediction of what it will look like in March.

And that is really it.

744driver 01-01-2013 12:30 PM

Hey, I have an idea...how about we refer you to the thread below. Please do your homework, and read the entire 500+ pages if you are even remotely interested in Atlas Air (or any other ACMI, Supplemental, etc carrier)...that way you don't waste your time, the company's time, and most importantly, take up a slot from someone that is genuinely right for this job...yes, it is a long thread, and has strayed on occasion, but I promise you it is actually worth your time.

Good luck.

I meant that I know that no two months are ever the same. Of course they're not predictions, but examples would still be nice.

Thanks. I already read that thread. I saw the examples people had posted. But a lot has changed since in the world since some of them were posted and every example better helps one picture in their head "this could be my life" than just "17 days on, 8.9" tablet, etc". Maybe its just the way I learn. Facts and stats don't help nearly as much as actual examples.

Sorry this is too much to ask for.

Second year JFK 744/8 F/O here. These are my schedules from the last 6 months of 2012. Hope this helps. Keep in mind that the flights from and to JFK/LGA at the beginning and end of each trip are fake, and are there for pay purposes only. Those flights were actually from my gateway (home city) airport. "X" days are days off. "VX" days are days off where I've voluntarily made myself available to pick up open time trips. "REST" are days off at the end of a trip where I can't fly due to 4-man crew regulatory rest requirements. Anything with a * in front of the departure point is a commercial airline flight or deadhead on a company plane. R2 is 90 minute callout reserve duty in a hotel. PT is a 6 month sim check but not a full checkride. FBS is the -8 differences training.

The point he was making is that the examples posted are meaningless. What is awarded and what really happens are two different worlds, so basing decisions on the example is a recipe for disappointment.

The best plan is as it has always been. Bid what you want, get what you bid and expect it all to change minute by minute. Expect to leave the U.S. in the rearview mirror on Day 1 and see it again in the windshield on Day 17...maybe. Don't plan on being home until your feet cross the front door threshold.

And all that is subject to change and the needs of the customer...

I completely understand that, but seeing a "this actually is what happened to an Atlas Air pilot" makes it a lot easier to get a grasp as to what the life is like. Of course, you can't expect to ever have the schedule in the example, but you can see what your life will be like.

With all due respect, you do not appear to understand. An Atlas pilot's schedule from last month has -0- value in predicting their schedule next month.

Some trips at Atlas are short. Most are long. There are no fixed routes (well, very few and senior). Some layovers are short. Some layovers are long. Layovers occur on any of 5 continents. The odds of you being on the continent that you “expected” are not high. The only thing that is known is when you leave and, more or less, when you will get home. Trying to see more than that is just throwing entrails onto the ground and trying to read them.

742dash answered perfectly. If you need to know more than that, it's not knowable. For me, it's a monthly adventure that takes on a life of it's own. I love the unpredictable...keeps things fresh. If that sounds good, then maybe you'll fit at Atlas.

I completely understand. You don't seem to understand where I'm coming from though. There must just be a disconnect here.

What I'm trying to say is... if you asked me about what my schedule was like and I said "well it could be anything and it won't be what was originally scheduled." Though accurate, that doesn't tell me anything what so ever as to the actual day to day of the job. When asked where you go for the month, do you tell your brother "Anywhere on the 5 continents" and leave it at that? Do you tell your girlfriend "You know when I left and when I got back, why would you want to know anything in the middle"? Do you tell your neighbor "You wouldn't understand, I'm an ACMI pilot"? No. They already know all those things. You probably give them examples. Last month I went to these places. The month before I had an interesting long overnight in Germany. The month before I rode around as a passenger on airline flights for half the month. And they don't walk away thinking that "742Dash's route is to xyz every thursday"... but they do walk away with a better understanding of what you do for a living. A lot better understanding than "He goes everywhere for 17 days and says I don't understand his life".

In the schedules posted as an example by our very generous forum friend, I am not sitting here saying... ok so I'm going to have 3 HHN overnights a month, I'll be off two weekends, etc. Of course not, but you seem to think thats what I'm trying to get out of this.

What I am seeing, and what I am getting out of it... is there is generally one long chunk of days off a month. It is anywhere in the month. There are typically one to two flights a day. I see a good chunk of deadheads on varied airlines. I see that you can go all around the world in a month. I see overnights in some cities that I would love, some cities I wouldn't care for, and some cities that I've never heard of. It looks like I'd be pretty familiar with ANC. I also don't see 5 flights a day every day. I don't see out and backs between the same podunk cities in the midwest. I don't see a long HNL layover on every month. I see that you guys sometimes limo between cities after rest then go back into rest.

None of this has any bearing on a future schedule. I get that. Thats what you're trying to say. I've read it a hundred times, and trust me, I get it. I don't expect to ever have one of these monthly lines. But you saying that one schedule has no bearing at all on the next is wrong. You can look at the 6 examples and see that they're all pretty similar. They don't go to the same places on the same days, but by looking at them, you can get an idea of what a month looks like. You can see what you guys actually do for a month, and it sure is a lot more descriptive than "17-20 days and you won't know whats coming and don't ask to know more."

You guys live an unpredictable and different life, but when people ask questions about that, the answer is too frequently "we live an unpredictable and different life, and there is no more that can be said about it, and you're clueless if you think otherwise."

I can't believe I just wrote this much defending why I asked a question on an internet message board.

I don't have a brother and my wife would be ****ed if I had a girlfriend, but yea -- what you describe is pretty much how it goes. My wife no longer makes any effort to keep track of where I am, and some of my neighbors think that therefore I must work for the CIA.

I have an answer if someone asks where I have been, and that is what my non-aviation friends have learned to do. But the future? Where I am going next week? I don't pretend to have a clue and those close to me don't bother to ask. Where I have been, when I go out next and when I am supposed to get home are the only points discussed.

Your comment about seeing ANC is a good example. I have not been there for probably 6 months. On the other hand there have been periods where I felt like it was a second home. In the last few months I have seen a lot of South America for some reason, and yet none of my schedules showed South America at the start of the month and previous to this set of trips I had not been there much at all.

My next trip is for 2 days (this is rare). I packed for 6.

With regard to DH, there have been years when I have had status in all the airline alliances -- yet 2013 will find me with just Gold on American (and that by the skin of my teeth). At one time I had 5 star gold with Hertz rent a car, but I have not been to a Hertz counter in over a year.

I have spent too much time on this, but it is important for people thinking about Atlas, or ACMI in general, to understand that THERE IS NO TYPICAL SCHEDULE. There is no connection between past schedules, current schedules and future schedules.

At least we both agree this thread has become exhausting. haha.

Maxcackel 01-01-2013 06:58 PM

Ok you guys need to get off the read the whole thread and our scheds are way to complicated to explain so don't ask crap. Lolwut is just asking for a taste of Atlas life and he got what he needed. We should all post six months of schedules from different bases to get an even better taste so potential new hires can make an informed decision.
I was lucky enough to meet an Atlas guy and got a copy of his schedules to get a taste of Atlas life.
My schedules look very similar just mix up the overnights, remove some and add other cool places to the mix.
Pay hours not block run from 75 to 95 a month most are 80ish.
Great place to work, good pay, fun overnights more than crappy overnights, great people to fly with and good training department.
I use to travel internationally for fun and flew regionals so now it's like I'm home 2 weeks then go on vacation for 15-17 days and sight see and take pictures of really cool places.

Good on the guy that answered the OP questions.
If one has to read a 500 page thread just to be interested....eish.

Sorry guys, I actually thought this whole thread had merit and was worth reading.
To know that there is no set schedule is one thing, to see it on a "calendar" is another.
A lot like being in the military, gotta admit, I love it!

It is nice to post the schedule, but there may be some issue of proprietary information, security, etc that may warrant not posting schedules in the future...IMO, posting schedules is NOT a good idea.

useless 01-02-2013 03:13 PM

Flying at Atlas(ACMI) is like working at any on demand 135 outfit. Except you fly big jets and the stage lengths can be 4000 miles opposed to a couple hundred. And you're gone 17 days.

Today I'm in Bahrain. Yesterday I was told I am flying to Amsterdam. Today I was told I am going to Hong Kong instead. Maybe tomorrow I will go somewhere else... but I'm fairly sure I'll be home by the 9th.

I don't fly at Atlas.

OMG!!! Someone asked a question outside of the other Altas thread! And he doesn't understand the schedules so he asked to see an example to better understand?! HE is NOT ACMI material. GET OVER IT ALREADY.

The other thread does have a great wealth of knowledge, but it's also about 5,240 (and growing) replies, of which about (speculating from what I've read, which is a lot of it) 2000 of repeated/superfluous/worthless information.

Thank you to those who post relevant information and to those who ask good questions. It's very helpful.

Good luck to all who seek.

Changes? We don't need no stinking changes!

My entire schedule just changed from ICN, PVG, HKG runs to NRT, ICN, PVG turns...

But yes, you will experience some version of what has been posted in the previous examples. Just shake it all up and throw the dice.

I have been here for 5 years, was furloughed 7 months, and have been based in STN, ANC, JKF, HSV, ANC, LAX.

Don't worry. It will change.

captainv 01-02-2013 05:07 PM

FWIW, life on the 767 can be a bit different. We don't have the varied route structure the 747 has, so although things can and do change plenty ahead of time, once you get going, you'll probably stick with the plan, unless you've got a long layover somewhere really nice.

Looking back, my sked looks like the ones posted, but looking ahead is different. JFK 767 guys have been bidding reserve lines since october. Maybe we'll get lines of flying to bid for when AMC picks back up, but who knows. CVG and LAX have set schedules, so those bid packets look more normal.

T333 01-02-2013 06:16 PM

my sched

another example:

I am about 1/3 of the way up jfk -400 fo list. 60 day hybrid line (4 rsv days the rest a line of flying) I bid this trip to get Christmas off. Before day 1 of R1 the first 5 day trip and the following 17 day trip were removed from my line and replaced with all R1. then a new 5 day trip appeared. 24 hour later it was replaced by the original 5 day trip just moved up about 24 hours. next trip (the one I am on now) as I said it was removed (customer cancelled about 1/2 the flying so R1. assigned to Dh to Europe, operated pax flight Dh home again. Then changed to operate to Europe, fly pax flight then DH home. I knew the Dh home would not happen, so I am sitting in themiddle east, enroute to Africa, europe
, sit for 5 days to DH home. so as you can see it changes a lot. my next trip will probably go as sked cause it is a quick Polar flight to Asia and back. bottom line, I was away from home 10 days in Dec and I'll work 16 in Jan.

Hope this helps

The -400 was stable when it was new. Don't worry, as the fleet size reaches critical mass (and it is almost there) Scheduling will start to churn it. :)
