Is SIC Type Sufficient?
The new reg requires a type. Is an SIC type sufficient?
|
No. But if you're working as a 121 FO on July 31, 2013, you can wait to get a PIC type until January 2016.

last two comments each got it partially right.
If you are employed by a 121 carrier before 7/31/13, already have an ATP certificate, yet an SIC type, you have until January 1st, 2016, to get your PIC. this is the only grandfathering the FAA put in. |
What are we talking about here guys? SIC/PIC what ?
|
Yup! FOs can now log PIC time on their legs as sole manipulator of controls because they have a PIC type. :D

Can anybody else chime in on this? Because I'd love to log PIC time without dealing with all the other captain bs... |

I believe not without going through your airline specific "upgrade" training curriculum.

You need to totally and forever separate the ideas of being the PIC and logging PIC time. Yeah, I think it's wrong too, even when my company says to note on the release when the Captain was resting and who was acting as PIC during that time.

You may choose to log your legs as an FO as PIC, but I suggest keeping a separate column because you better be ready to deduct all that time when applying for a job at a major. When applying for a job, they only want to know of your PIC time acting as a captain (not part 61). So if you are logging PIC as an FO, get ready to remove all those times.
A great example is to just take a look at the FedEx application page - they clearly state that they are only interested in your PIC where you were the acting Captain (to meet the PIC requirement). You can log PIC as an FO, but you are not the true PIC for the flight. |
