This! If you’re ever on a HND layover the Yasukuni shrine and war museum is a good visit. That is exactly what they say, that an oil embargo forced their hand into a defensive strike at the US at Pearl Harbor. It’s eye opening.

The US is not an empire, we can cede some leadership of the free world without losing our economic base... we buy more than we sell to begin with.

The British empire suffered some natural decline, but fundamentally they voluntarily abdicated in the end (post WWII)... lot of that had to do with changing societal attitudes (ie it's *not* OK to lord it over other people in far away lands).
