I've been considering apply for a Cargo pilot job. However I'm not sure if I should apply or wait till I'm not just barely at the required amount of hours requested by the employers. They ask for F/O – 500 hours total time. Commercial Pilot , ASEL, AMEL Instrument rating CFI, CFII and or MEI preferred. I'm just at 500 hours with commercial, ASEL, AMEL an Instrument rating. I however have no flight instructor experience. Also this job is for flying Shorts SD3-60 I was under the impression in the USA you would need an ATP to fly as a F/O? I guess my two questions are.
1. What should I have as far as experience to seriously be considered for the job?
2. Do I need an ATP to fly Cargo in a Shorts SD3-60?
Thanks for the help in advance.

You don't need the ATP for cargo (or passenger) operations unless it's under part 121.
The job is probably under part 135 or 91, in which case all you need legally is a CPL and probably IR.
At that level (entry level) if they say 500 hours, they mean 500 hours so you might as well apply if you're interested.

Thank you I know they require ATP for there captains. However does 500 hours sound about right to fly Shorts SD3-60 turboprops as a First Officer? To me this sounds insanely low compared to other companies requirements.

The requirements, after meeting regulatory minimums are dependent on the market. When they are tons of qualified applicants available then while they might state the minimum requirement is 500 hrs, they hire well above that. If the pool dries out, they can stick to their minimums. Supply and demand. Lot's of hiring going on if you meet the requirements and have the right to work. Preferred requirements are not usually "hard" requirements unless so stated.
