Default New York based

Hi folks
Little bit of a background. My grandson is about 4-6 months from earning all his hours, credentials, ratings etc. I’ve been raising him for the last several years. He’s smart, hard-working and aspires to be a career pilot. He’s been fortunate enough to be building time with taking the flight instructor path. However, I believe it’s leaving him a bit out of the loop. Naturally all career steps are on him but as a concerned old grand dad of a 19 year old with parents, I’d like to help him navigate through his path.
We live in Suffolk county on Long Island.
Kennedy, LaGuardia, Islip and farmingdale are all pretty close.
Besides applying to regional airlines, what are some other career moves for a bright young fellow just starting out as a pilot. I believe he wants to stay NY based.
Thanks I’m advance.

Good news: most majors have bases in NY, and they go very junior. If you actually live there and want to be based in NY you'll enjoy faster progressio and higher pay than folks who prefer places like the inter-mountain west.

Regionals are *typically* the best path to major airlines. You *typically* build experience faster than other aviation sectors, and obviously the training and operations is very similar to what major airlines do. Other aviation sectors are quite varied and hard to predict, and the better jobs only hire experienced turbine pilots. There are forums on this site for the other sectors. Small aircraft cargo often hires low-time pilots.

The caveat to regionals right now is they are having a pilot shortage, which is good in some ways but bad in others... they are losing a lot of captains and check airmen (LCA). New hires need LCA to complete their training and get on line to fly. They also need CA's to fly with obviously. Many regionals have long training delays, and some may have to stop firing soon because of LCA and CA shortages. So you'd want to do some research on specific regionals (you can ask in the forums here).

This thread lists domiciles for all regionals and majors, plenty in NY...
