Default What are the Majors Looking For?

I am a regional pilot, returning from 5 years of Mil leave next month, with the ability to upgrade to Captain as soon as I feel comfortable. That being said, I know a few people who jumped to F9 to get the A320 type rating instead. Which do the majors prefer? 121 PIC at a Regional, or more right seat time but the extra type.

Thanks for any insight

I'll make the call that they generally "prefer" PIC.

But in this era, they are in the dilemma of pulling too many CA's (and LCA) from their own regionals. To the point where they are all metering hiring from their own feeders.

So the benefit of going to an LCC is that the legacies won't hesitate to hire you, if you float above their competitive threshold whatever that it is at the moment.

Do you have mil wings? That makes a big difference.

If you have a single type rating, getting another one will improve your score, so that would favor going to a LCC.

Ask around about major hiring at your regional, it matters if the regional dedicated to a single legacy... the other two should happily poach I'd think.

Get flight current while you’re protected by the union at your regional… 5 years off is a lot of time and will likely require some extra training events. Once your flight current, apply to the competitors of your regionals mainline partner. If that doesn’t work then take the upgrade and update your applications.

I do have Mil wings. But I now fly unmanned on the Mil side, have not flown manned in a while. Also have types in the E175, LRJET, Beechjet 400 and flew the C-21/C-130 mil side, though minimally. I did think the pulling too many CAs may play a role in getting a call… appreciate the insight!

Yep - getting current before they get rid of me is priority…and relearning the business and FAA-isms. My original plan was 4-5 months as an FO getting comfortable and then upgrading if no calls come. We fly for all of the mainlines so fingers crossed haha

Focus on completing training then start working on legacy apps and interview prep. They are hiring mil who haven't touched any plane in 10+ years, with you current in 121 you should get a call quickly... just be ready for the interview.

You mil wings are more valuable than you think, may be hard to believe but times have changed. A lot.
