Aviation Related Affiliations on Resume?
Hi Lori,
Is it a good or bad idea to include aviation related affiliations (i.e. OBAP, WAI, ALPA, AOPA, etc.) on your resume? Just wondering if doing so would possibly help or hinder one’s chances of getting called? Does the answer change depending on the targeted airline?
Thanks in advance!

My guess is that they would only help. It shows that you have an interest in aviation beyond big money and great lifestyle. Or even better, it shows some affirmative action affiliation.
I wouldn't necessarily include a union though...not all managers are big fans. Besides, they will know what airline you came from so they will know what, if any, union affiliation you have.
An exception might be work on benign union projects...safety committee, pilot mentoring, HIMS, etc.

I agree with Rick - absolutely do NOT include union affiliations. You don't want to give the wrong impression. Interviewers are representing the company and will be sensitive to union listings. The initial questions that will run through their head is "how pro-union is he?" If it comes up in conversation during the interview, fine. You have the opportunity to talk about your involvement and alleviate any fears they might have.
I also recommend omitting AOPA - unless you own an aircraft. AOPA supports general aviation and oftentimes is directly opposed to the interests of commercial aviation. Some are sensitive to this.
If you belong to other organizations then by all means, list them. You want to "connect" with your reader... and they may also belong to the Alpha-Beta-Madeupa Organization.

Thank you both for the helpful responses. I have another somewhat related question, and again would appreciate your input.
Would you include any non-aviation related affiliations on your resume? I know a lot of companies like to see community involvement, volunteer work, etc., and was wondering if would be appropriate to include any of this? I'm assuming it would depend on the specific group, but in general, is this a good idea?

Of course, use discretion. Airlines folks tend to be conservative, don't flag yourself as some sort of hard-core liberal, rable-rouser, or activist. They don't want that kind of attitude (or press coverage).
Also don't mention any specific political affiliations, either way. They might disqualify your application for that, just like if you disclose your marital or family status.
