Default Airline apps incident question

Under the FAA actions section, AirlineApps asks:

Have you ever had...an aircraft incident.

The Delta addendum asks:

Have you ever had, or been involved in, any aircraft accidents, incidents, or violations--either reported or unreported?

NTSB 830 defines an incident as
“an occurrence other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft, which affects or could affect the safety of operations.” NTSB 830 also lists incidents that require immediate notification.

Regarding incidents, what needs to be listed on the application? Do they really want to know any occurrence which 'could affect' the safety of operations? That is a pretty broad definition and a lot of situations with an entirely safe outcome could affect the safety of flight. Or are they only interested in incidents that require immediate notification?

Also, what does the Delta question mean by reported or unreported? Violations are determined and recorded by the FAA, not reported by the pilot. Accidents have to be reported and you would have pretty big problems by not reporting an accident. Immediate notification incidents also have a mandatory reporting requirement. So I take this to mean they want to know about all incidents. I want to be honest on the application, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by checking a box that should not be checked in the first place.

Incident or not:

Engine fails, no damage.
Generator failure (not requiring an emergency bus)
Manual gear extension
etc.

My gut feeling: List it. Adversity, and those puckered situations are what defines if we have what it takes. If you have just sat there and monitored the instruments, who knows what you might yelp out, when things go dark.
Engine failures, smoke in the cockpit and other emergency situations should be reported, at least to the chief pilot or DOM, and let them do the paperwork. Do the airlines really want pilots afraid of thier own shadows? That's what it seems.

Always check with the FAA before you answer these questions. I was informed that there have been situations when the pilot had no idea that he/she had an incident on their record...and was later booted from whatever new hire class they were in. If I understood correctly, the definition of an incident has changed recently. This causes more things to go on record.

My fear with the online applications is that the airlines can set filters to something like 1) No Accidents/Incidents 2) No DWIs 3) Speeding tickets <2............

So even if you saved the day with a flaming airplane, you will still have to list it as an incident. Makes you wonder....

Sorry for the thread revival, but wondering if anyone had additional insight -- should I list an inflight engine shutdown as an incident?
