Default What would the airlines think of this time?

I have an opportunity at a job flying SIC in a Kingair 90 doing aerial survey work. About 3/4s of the flight time is SIC when doing the actual survey. The company allows the SICs to be PIC on repositioning flights, so I would actually get some PIC turbine. The SIC is required by the insurance, but I would assume since they are aerial survey that they are operating under part 91. I have a couple acquaintances that fly for this company and they said that people have been hired from the company based on the SIC time that they had logged.

My end goal is to fly for the airlines, but with the ATP rule going into effect, that is going to take several more years where I'm at.

I have just over 750 hours with 75 multi. Right now, I am a CFI and only averaging about 25-30 hours of flight time per month. Also, I teach primarily private and instrument, in small two seat non-IMC approved aircraft. In the past year that I've been in this job I've gotten 0 hours of multi and only 1 hour of actual (from when I rented a 172). Also, with teaching primary students, my opportunities to build that 500 hours 50nm cross country are very limited. I'm sticking with my current company because I'm locked into an apartment lease, and it is a salaried job with benefits. They pay isn't particularly good, but decent for a 750 hour CFI, and due to an injury a year ago, I can't afford to take a job without health insurance. Before this job, I worked an a flight school that payed hourly wages, and you pretty much had to find your own students. In this economy it is really difficult to make enough money to pay bills doing that, and I raked up a lot of credit card debt. I can't really afford to go back to that kind of thing, even if there are more hours of flight time. On the other hand, I feel like I can't really afford to barely scrape by for another 2-3+ years where I'm at trying to get all of the ATP mins.

The aerial survey job is local, has health insurance, and starts out $5k more than I make now, goes up another $5k after six months and another $5k after twelve months. The downside is that there is a 12month training contract, and then 6 month contracts after that initial year, also, the pilots at that company only average about the same amount of flight time that I do. However, it is all in a king air, lots of flights count toward the ATP XC, actual instrument during re-position flights, and they get some real world cross country experience where they actually go somewhere as apposed to flying a private pilot student to a crappy airport 50 miles away and back. With all of the time off there is maybe some potential to pick up some CFI time at the local FBO (but no guarantees). I'm very interested in this opportunity, but I don't want to take the job if it is going to compromise achieving my end goal of flying for the airlines.

Sounds like you ought to be more worried about the ME Turbine time that would be available as far as totals and a $5k-15k bump in salary that might give you a little extra cash to fly on the side or keep that other CFI job.
There are lots of threads on the forum dealing with the logging of SIC time - there is even a sticky recently put up that should answer many of your questions.

I was in your situation a year ago. I flew as an SIC in a C90. I was able to log the time as PIC on certain legs. When I did my ATP a few months ago, the examiner recommended I log my SIC time as dual received since the left seaters were MEIs.
Good luck!
